A half-step finer than #57, and the gradation the concrete and asphalt plants actually buy.
#67 versus #57 — when the difference matters
These two gradations overlap heavily and plenty of jobs will take either. The distinction is the top size: #57 passes a 1-1/2 inch sieve, #67 passes 3/4. That makes #67 slightly finer and slightly better graded, which matters in two situations.
The first is concrete. Ready-mix plants want consistent, predictable aggregate that pumps and finishes cleanly, and #67 gives a tighter particle distribution than #57. If a mix design calls for #67, substituting #57 changes the water demand and the finish.
The second is anywhere the pour or the lift is thin. In a narrow trench or a shallow base course, inch-and-a-half stone bridges and leaves voids where three-quarter stone will fill properly.
For open drainage — French drains, drainfields, under-slab — either works and #57 is usually cheaper and more available. Ask us and we will tell you honestly which one the pits are moving that week.
Buying #67 for plant supply
Most of our #67 volume goes to concrete and asphalt producers rather than site contractors, which shapes how it is bought: standing weekly tonnage, locked pricing, and delivery windows that have to hold because a plant that runs out of coarse aggregate stops.
We can run 20-plus loads a day into a single location with prior notice, and for that kind of programme we quote locked tonnage pricing under a formal contract rather than load by load. If you are buying for a plant, talk to us about a supply agreement instead of calling in spot orders.
Quantities and coverage
#67 runs about the same weight as #57 — call it 1.35 tons per cubic yard. One ton covers roughly 110 square feet at 2 inches, 55 square feet at 4 inches.
For concrete work you are usually buying to a mix design rather than a coverage figure, in which case order by the ton against the yardage of concrete being placed and let the plant tell you the ratio. Working out how much you need
Material is sold by the ton. Plans are drawn in cubic yards. That mismatch is where most ordering errors come from, and they are expensive in both directions — running short stops a crew, and over-ordering by a large margin ties up money in a pile.
The arithmetic: multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, then multiply by the material's weight per yard. Most rock runs about 1.35 to 1.4 tons per cubic yard; compacted base is heavier at roughly 1.65; topsoil is lighter at about 1.15.
Then allow for compaction. Base and fill lose roughly 20 to 25 percent of their loose volume once they are properly compacted, so the tonnage you order should be above the theoretical plan volume. Our tonnage calculator builds that allowance in and converts the answer into truckloads.
Order slightly heavy. Two extra tons in a pile costs almost nothing and always gets used. Two tons short on a Friday afternoon costs you a whole extra delivery and a crew standing around.
